Electric Radiant Heat, also know as Ceiling Heat, is no longer being installed in California, but there are many still being used today. These heat systems are generally found in rental units due to the low cost of installation and space saving qualities. These were typically installed in "all electric" apartments at a time when nuclear power plants were promising low cost electricity to the masses. The system is relatively simple. An appropriately sized wire is stapled to the unfinished drywall ceiling. The wires are then routed to a room thermostat where the temperature can be controlled. Power is provided through the electric service panel where an individual breaker controls the heater for each room.
Ceilings with radiant heat are typically finished with blown on acoustic material, but occasionally we'll see a smooth, troweled finish. Finding a company to service these systems is not easy.
