Electric Water Heater

Electric water heaters collect water in a large tank. The water is heated by direct immersion heating elements. As hot water is removed from the tank the dip tube replenishes the tank with cold water. The temperature of the water is regulated by one or two thermostats, depending on the size of the tank.

If any of these elements break the water heater stops working.

Gas Water Heater

A gas water heater operates in a similar way to the electric water heater. Water collects in a large tank. A dip tube pumps in cold water to mix with the hot. The difference is that instead of a direct immersion heating element the water is heated by a gas burner. The gas is fed through a gas burner control module that controls the ignition of the pilot light and works as a thermometer.

Tankless Water Heater

Tankless water heaters, due to their small footprint, are gaining in popularity. As the water flows through the device it is instantly heated by the heat exchanger coil. Copper heat exchangers are preferred in these units. The copper has a high thermal conductivity and ease of fabrication.
